An eco-lodge above Peru's Sacred Valley

Adobe walls, solar power and terraced views over the Urubamba River make this Andean lodge a gentler way into Inca country.

Built from local adobe and stone, the eco-lodges scattered across Peru's Sacred Valley trade the noise of Cusco for terraced maize fields and a straight sightline down to the Urubamba River. Solar panels and greywater gardens are standard rather than a selling point, and most rooms come with a wood stove for the cold Andean nights.

The valley sits noticeably lower than Cusco, which makes it a smart first stop for altitude acclimatization before pushing on to Machu Picchu. Lodges typically arrange half-day visits to nearby Pisac or Ollantaytambo, plus quinoa and cuy cooking demonstrations with the kitchen staff.

Ask for a room facing east if sunrise over the valley matters to you, the peaks light up in sequence and it's a genuinely different experience from a west-facing view. Bring sun protection even on cool days; at this altitude the UV is fierce regardless of temperature.
