Palawan's Lagoons, From El Nido to Coron

Between El Nido and Coron, a scatter of limestone islands hides lagoons so still they barely register as water.

El Nido's Bacuit archipelago is the famous half — karst towers dropping straight into turquoise water, accessible mostly by the standardized island-hopping tours that every outfitter in town runs; book Tour A for the Big and Small Lagoons, and go early, before the boats stack up at the lagoon mouths.

Coron, a few hours north by ferry, trades lagoons for wrecks — a dozen Japanese ships sunk here in 1944 sit in clear, shallow water and are snorkelable without a certification, alongside Kayangan Lake, routinely ranked the cleanest lake in the Philippines and reached by a short, steep climb over limestone.

Skip the group boats when you can and hire a private bangka for a half-day; it costs more, but it means reaching Secret Lagoon or Twin Lagoon before the flotillas arrive, and the boatmen know which coves the standard tours skip entirely.
