Dawn in a Birding Hide on Brazil's Pantanal

Before the Pantanal's heat sets in, a riverside hide delivers one of the densest concentrations of birdlife anywhere in South America.

The Pantanal floods and drains on a seasonal cycle that concentrates an extraordinary density of wildlife into its remaining waterways during the dry season, and a dawn sit in a riverside hide can turn up hyacinth macaws overhead, jabiru storks stalking the shallows and a toucan or two working a nearby fig tree, often all within the same half hour.

Hides are usually a simple raised platform or blind set back from a known feeding area, and the discipline is patience: arrive in the dark, settle in before the birds start moving, and let a local guide's ear for calls tell you what's approaching before you can see it.

Bring binoculars with a wide field of view rather than heavy magnification, since a lot of the best sightings are quick movement through foliage rather than a bird sitting still, and pack for both a cold pre-dawn wait and a scorching midmorning — Pantanal temperature swings are dramatic.
