A night in a Scottish Highlands castle hotel

A working baronial castle turned small hotel gives you turret bedrooms, roaring fires and a private loch view, no inheritance required.

The best conversions are still family-run estates rather than chain hotels, which means the fireplaces are lit for guests rather than for show, the walls are hung with the family's own portraits and stag heads, and the whisky library is genuinely stocked to be drunk. Bedrooms in the original tower are the ones worth requesting: uneven floors, deep window seats set into three-foot-thick walls, and four-poster beds that were built to keep a Highland winter out.

Many estates still run as working land, so beyond the castle itself there is often fishing on a private loch, a walk to a ruined chapel, or a stalking excursion with the estate's own gamekeeper. Dinner is usually a set menu built around what came off the estate that week — venison, salmon, garden vegetables — served in a dining room that has fed guests the same way for a century or more.

Book a tower room over one in the newer wing if the price difference allows it, and pack proper layers regardless of season: stone castles hold the cold, and the fire in your room will only do so much.
