Sleeping inside a Cappadocia cave hotel

Sleeping inside a Cappadocia cave hotel

In Göreme, entire hotel rooms are hand-carved from soft volcanic rock, and waking inside one feels less like a hotel stay than borrowing a piece of geology for the night.

The best cave hotels in Göreme and neighboring Uçhisar are not decorated to look like caves — they are caves, tunneled generations ago into the region's soft tuff stone and only recently fitted with plumbing and underfloor heating. Walls run a meter thick, curving into vaulted ceilings and stone alcoves that double as headboards, shelves and window seats without a single nail.

That thickness keeps the rooms remarkably cool through the valley's hot afternoons and warm once the sun drops, and the silence inside is total — no street noise reaches through solid rock. Most properties are stacked up a hillside, so your terrace looks straight out over a jumble of fairy chimneys and, if you are up early enough, dozens of hot-air balloons lifting off in the pink pre-dawn light.

Pay a little more for a room with its own private terrace rather than a shared one, and ask specifically whether the room is an original excavated cave or a newer concrete-and-stone build made to match — both can be lovely, but only one gives you the real thick-walled hush that makes the stay worth it.
